The Sked: TUESDAY RESULTS April 10

>Week to week increases were evident last night!  In a break from a seemingly endless four-network death spiral, NBC Tuesday showed some impressive signs last night, with all three reality shows up from last week and the network matching the year ago nightly rating.  In this environment, flat is up for any network.  Glee returned to the schedule to an unimpressive (and season low) rating, but it was much better than the weak 8-9 pm comedies recently and helped get New Girl back on track.

NBC’s new Tuesday night is starting to solidify and tied FOX for #1, up a very good three tenths from last week.  The Biggest Loser rose two tenths from last week, while The Voice Results (again the highest-rated network show of the night) and Fashion Star (rebounding from a series low) each went up three tenths.  Last year on this night: Biggest Loser (2.7) from 8-10 pm and Parenthood (2.1).

FOX Tuesday returned to a winning form with the end of the four half-hour comedy experiment.  FOX tied for #1 last night with the return of Glee.  Although the high school musical comedy-drama returned to a season low 2.7, it was enough to get New Girl back to a 2.7, a level it hasn’t seen since mid-March.  Raising Hope also benefited, on track to hit a rating it hasn’t seen since early March.  Last year on this night, FOX aired a Glee repeat (1.4) followed by Raising Hope repeat (1.1) and Traffic Light repeat (0.9).

FOX Tues     High Low  3.06 3.13 3.20 3.27 4.03 4.10

CBS was a competitive third place last night, averaging a 2.4 rating for the night and only one tenth behind NBC and FOX.  However, all three CBS dramas are on track to set season lows, with NCIS Los Angeles particularly troublesome at a 2.3 rating (down 23% from the last original episode and down 30% from the same week last year).  Unforgettable, fighting for a second season, made the decision harder by falling back significantly below the 2 rating level.  Last year CBS averaged a 3.1 on the comparable night of originals:  NCIS (3.9), NCIS Los Angeles (3.3) and The Good Wife (2.0).

The return of the underwhelming comedies Last Man Standing (1.7 rating) and Cougar Town (1.5) did not do ABC and the Dancing with the Stars Results show any favors last night.  It’s not like the Dancing recap show last week was that much higher rated in absolute terms (1.8 rating), but all of that 1.8 rating could be counted on to flow into the live results show at 9 pm, whereas most of the 1.5 Cougar Town rating probably fragments to other sources, leaving the results show to recruit most of its audience from a standing start.  The results show is now down 26% from the premiere two weeks ago and down a similar percentage from the same week a year ago.  The same night last year:  Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (1.5), Dancing with the Stars results (3.1) and Body of Proof (2.5).
