NETWORK FINALS:  NBC’s PRESEASON NFL game and CBS’s BIG BROTHER gained 0.1 in final numbers, but the reruns of MADAM SECRETARY, THE SIMPSONS and BROOKLYN NINE-NINE lost the same.

CABLE HIGHLIGHTS:  MTV’s own airing of the 2016 VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS crashed by 0.81 from last year to 1.78 (that puts it down a shocking 2.38 from just 2 years ago, a 57% drop).  Naturally, MTV’s spin on this is to emphasize the show’s online gains, but between this rating and the Olympics, it’s clear that live events are no longer a sure thing on linear TV.  Meanwhile, here’s the full rundown of the show’s airing on the other Viacom networks:  0.41 on VH1, 0.24 on Comedy Central, 0.20 on Spike, 0.19 on BET, 0.11 on MTV2, 0.11 on TV Land, 0.07 on CMT, 0.05/105K on Centric, 0.05/104K on MTV Classic, and 0.03/72K on Logo.  (Note:  MTV ran a special pre-VMAs episode of TEEN MOM at 0.68.)

THE STRAIN returned to FX at 0.62, down 0.16 from last summer’s premiere, but up 0.08 from the season finale.  On AMC, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD was down 0.03 to 1.59, TALKING DEAD fell 0.09 to 0.48, and GEEKING OUT was up 0.02 to 0.12.  The surprise of the night, though, may have been the 0.86 for the (series?) finale of HBO’s THE NIGHT OF, up a mighty 0.17 from last week to 0.86, with BALLERS (airing 45 minutes later than usual) down 0.16 to 0.48, and VICE PRINCIPALS (ditto) down 0.11 to 0.30.  Starz’s POWER dropped 0.12 to 0.84, and SURVIVOR’S REMORSE was down 0.08 to 0.33.  On Showtime, RAY DONOVAN fell 0.08 to 0.24, and the ROADIES finale was down 0.03 to 0.08. On Adult Swim, SQUIDBILLIES ticked up to 0.58, and BRAD NEELY’S HARG NALLIN ticked down to 0.49.  On TNT, THE LAST SHIP grew by 0.03 to 0.50, and MURDER IN THE FIRST lost 0.03 to 0.22. Hallmark’s CHESAPEAKE SHORES remained at 0.30.  USA’s MOTIVE rose 0.04 to 0.20.

The MTV shows aside, Discovery’s NAKED & AFRAID led the unscripted realm, up 0.02 to 0.83.  NBC Sport Net’s NASCAR race was at 0.68.  VH1’s BASKETBALL WIVES was steady at 0.56.  Bravo’s REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY was down 0.06 to 0.50.  On Food Network, COOKS VS CONS jumped 0.12 to 0.50, GREAT FOOD TRUCK RACE was at 0.49, and GUY’S GROCERY GAMES was up 0.07 to 0.43.  E!’s KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS plunged 0.31 to 0.38, but that was probably due in part to a pair of its stars appearing simultaneously on MTV, while WAGS was down 0.09 to 0.20.  TLC’s RETURN TO AMISH gained 0.06 to 0.36, and MY BIG FAT AMERICAN GYPSY WEDDING was up 0.02 to 0.26.  On A&E, ESCAPING POLYGAMY held at 0.32, and INTERVENTION was up 0.04 to 0.28.  History’s OZZY & JACK’S WORLD DETOUR fell 0.05 to 0.26.
