The second Friday of the new season was down 16% in the fast nationals from last year (4.7 rating with Adults 18-49 TOTAL for the four broadcast network versus 5.6 the same night in 2011).
It’s pretty much a disaster for CBS and FOX on this night. CBS has plunged 31% on the night from first to a weak third place, while FOX has fallen and it can’t get up — down 33% from a solid second place last year to fourth place this year.
ABC continues to be be up on the night (up 27% from the same night last year, the only network higher than last year, pushing ABC from worst to first on the low-rated night).
NBC is down a more moderate 14%, moving from third place last year to second place this year.

CBS hates to cancel shows early, but Made in Jersey has probably seen its last telecast. The whole night is a wreck, and that bomb could bring everything else down with it. Whack her. Now.

Last year on ABC on this night, two hour of repeats from 8-10 were stuck at a 1.1 rating and an original 20/20 barely registered at a 1.2 rating at 10 pm. This year ABC took Friday seriously with three hours of original (and relatively low-cost) programming. Shark Tank kicked off the night with a 1.7 rating, the highest-rated network program of the night, while Primetime: What Would You Do? scored an okay 1.4 at 9 pm and 20/20 pulled its usual 1.2. On a night with relatively few viewers available, reality and news programs are a much better path to victory than expensive scripted fare that gets lost in the shuffle.

NBC marginally improved 8 pm by repeating The Voice instead of Grimm this week, but the original Grimm held steady at a 1.6 rating (good enough for second-place honors among all Friday network programs). Dateline eked out a first-place 1.3 rating at 10 pm with an episode whose log line read: “A women with a secret is murdered.” Not a lot of information there, as that summary describes 71.4% of all Dateline stories in the past five years.
