The Sked: Saturday Ratings 12.31.2016

Happy New Year!  Ratings were down from last year, possibly in part because the night fell on a Saturday, but Mariah Carey’s lip-sync disaster will be viral forever.

DEMOGRAPHIC DETAIL: For each broadcast program (or hour segment), the chart below displays preliminary key advertiser demographics (adult 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings), audience skews (women 18-49, men 18-49 and adults 50+ shares) and total viewership (thousands of people over the age of 2).

Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.

ABC:  Although DICK CLARK’S NEW YEAR’S ROCKIN EVE dominated the night as usual, the 8-10P portion was down 0.4 to 1.9, and the 10PM hour dropped 0.4 to 3.5.  The trend continued in the late-night portion of the show, down 0.6 to 6.8.

NBC:  A TOAST TO 2016 fell 0.2 to 0.8.  At 10PM, a new LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS was at 0.8, down 0.2 from last year’s NEW YEAR’S EVE GAME NIGHT.  In late-night, NEW YEAR’S EVE WITH CARSON DALY perked up by 0.6 to 3.3.

FOX:  Tne network dropped the primetime portion of its New Year’s festivities and opted for 0.3/0.3 reruns.  In late-night, PITBULL’S NEW YEAR’S REVOLUTION was down 0.3 from last year’s edition to 2.4.

CBS:  Reruns at 0.4-0.5.

The networks come back to life tonight after weeks of holiday specials and reruns.  CBS has a preview of its Saturday series RANSOM followed by a special episode of PURE GENIUS; FOX uses afternoon football as lead-in to a preview of Tuesday’s sitcom THE MICK, followed by a special BROOKLYN NINE-NINE; and ABC has a preview of Monday’s THE BACHELOR, and then the season premiere of TO TELL THE TRUTH and a burn-off episode of CONVICTION.  On cable, Freeform gets into the preview game with the opening hour of Monday’s BEYOND.  Even PBS joins in the New Year’s festivities with the season premiere of SHERLOCK.
