Based on Friday’s and Saturday’s grosses, Weekend #18 of 2013 kicks of the summer with a very solid $213 million for the top 12 films, below the Avengers-fueled same weekend last year but well above the four-year average for this weekend.
Opening at 4,253 theaters late Thursday, Iron Man 3 from Disney grossed $68 million Thursday night-Friday and another $62 million Saturday, now on track for a $175 million opening weekend (very close to the $172 million ShowbuzzDaily forecast). The film is averaging a terrific $41,200 per theater for the weekend (eight times above the $5,333 opening weekend average for all wide-release films the last two years), while critical sentiment is fairly positive: 78% positive at RottenTomatoes (although top critics are a little less enthusiastic at 70% positive). Iron Man 3 is headed for $375 million total domestic, well above the $318 million for Iron Man and $312 million for Iron Man 2. Overseas gross is already at $504.8 million after only two weeks (blowing away the $266 million and $311 million total overseas grosses for the first two Iron Man films). A complete update of international box office will be posted later this morning.

Total Box Office Volume
The Top 12 Films this weekend are looking like $213 million total Friday-Sunday, higher than the $202 million estimated yesterday morning and up 19% from the four-year average for the comparable weekend but still down 15% from the same weekend last year (which featured the opening of The Avengers). But overall, summer is off to a solid start, which was not a given because of the spotty first four months of 2013.
