Box Office Year to Date and Studio Scorecards

Looking at wide-release films in North America (those that play on at least 400 screens at some point), 2013 now totals just over $2.9 billion, down 13% from 2012 and down 6% from the prior four-year average 2009-2012.  Each year-to-date period below is defined as the first Monday after New Year’s Day through the most recent Sunday.  The past week generated $205 million in wide-release North American box office, down 27% from the same week last year and even with the 2009-2012 average for the same week.

STUDIO SCORECARD.  With Iron Man 3 humming here and abroad, Disney’s worldwide total for the year to date is now almost double the total for the second place studio, 20th Century Fox.

Looking at the major genres, it is incredible to see just how dominant Action/Adventure is (the genre represents 49% of worldwide dollars to date and 60% of the overseas dollars going to Hollywood films).  The top two genres (Action/Adventure plus Drama) account for 71% of worldwide dollars (68% of domestic dollars and 74% of overseas dollars).
