US/Worldwide Weekend Box Office Report – 12.6.2020

OPENINGS:  Universal continued to be the main supplier of fresh product to gasping theatres, with both of the weekend’s wide openings.  They will, per the studio’s deals, be available at home in about 3 weeks–an arrangement that looks awfully good for theatres compared to Warners’ new plan to day-and-date releases at home from opening day.  HALF BROTHERS (Focus/Universal) was lackluster even by pandemic standards with a $720K start, unlikely to reach $5M in theatres.

ALL MY LIFE (Universal) was even lower with a $350K launch, perhaps capable of getting to $2.5M in US theatres.  It also has $730K overseas.

HOLDOVERS:  THE CROODS: A NEW AGE (DreamWorks/Universal) fell heavily from its Thanksgiving opening, down 55% to $4.4M over the Friday-Sunday period.  Nevertheless, it should pass $30M before it reaches homes, which will make it one of the highest-grossing releases since March.  It’s at $40.3M overseas after a $13.6M weekend in 10 markets ($12.2M of that from China).

The horror comedy FREAKY (Blumhouse/Universal) dropped 43% to $460K in its 4th weekend (it’s now available digitally), and probably won’t see $10M in US theatres.  It also has $5.6M overseas after a $357K weekend in 30 territories.

THE WAR WITH GRANDPA (101) is in its 9th week of theatrical release, and it still has a chance of reaching $20M in the US after a 44% drop to $330K.

In its 6th weekend, COME PLAY (Focus/Universal) lost 37% to $236K, aiming at a $10M US total.  It also has $2.1M overseas.

LET HIM GO (Focus/Universal) fell 52% to $216K in its 5th weekend, hoping to stretch to $10M in the US.  It’s at $930K overseas.

HONEST THIEF (Open Road) dropped 46% to $190K in its 9th weekend, with a chance of hitting $15M in the US.  It has $14M overseas.

TENET (Warners) has one more weekend ahead as a purely theatrical release before it arrives in homes.  After 14 weeks in US theatres, it’s at $57.6M with a 40% decline to $180K this weekend.  Overseas, it’s at $302.1M, a big number but not enough to dissuade Warners from its HBO Max play for the next year.

NEXT WEEKEND:  There are no wide theatrical openings currently scheduled until Christmas Day.
