Behind the US/Worldwide Weekend Box Office – 6.16.2024

OPENINGS:  INSIDE OUT 2 (Pixar/Disney) overdelivered massively compared to expectations with $155M in the US, a remarkable $65M higher than the start for 2015’s original Inside Out, and depending whether you count the “live-action” CG remake of The Lion King ($191.8M) as animated, either the #2 or #3 US opening for an animated feature ever, the other relevant title being Pixar’s The Incredibles 2 at $182.7M.  The $140M earned overseas may be even more impressive, given that Inside Out 2 was in only 38 territories.  The question now is whether the film can become Pixar’s 5th release to hit $1B worldwide (it’s worth noting that the other 4 were also sequels).

In a far tinier universe of newcomers, TUESDAY (A24) expanded to the low reaches of wide release at 654 theaters and managed a low $300K, a $450 weekend per-theater average.

TREASURE (Bleecker Street) was even smaller, with $250K at 650 theaters, a $400 average.

HOLDOVERS:  With no action competition and the expectation of a strong Father’s Day Sunday, BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE (Columbia/Sony) declined a slim 42% to $33M.  The absence of any major openings next weekend could propel it into contention to match Bad Boys For Life‘s $206.3M US total.  Overseas is $102.4M to date after a $30.8M weekend in 62 markets.

KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (20th/Disney), also in line for a Father’s Day bounce, reported a tiny 4% drop to $5.2M for the weekend, and may reach $170M in the US.  It’s ahead of War, although unlikely to catch Rise ($176.8M) or Dawn ($208.5M).  The international total is $216.7M after a $3.4M weekend in 52 territories.

Family movies felt the punch of Inside Out 2‘s arrival, with a Weekend 4 50% drop to $5M for THE GARFIELD MOVIE (Alcon/Columbia/Sony), on its way to $90M in the US.  It has $139.2M overseas after a $7.2M weekend in 60 markets.

THE WATCHERS (New Line/Warners) lost 48% to $3.7M, unlikely to get past $25M in the US.  Things were even worse overseas, where the total is $9.6M after a $2.9M weekend in 72 territories.

IF (Paramount) was toppled by Inside Out 2, down 56% to $3.5M in its 5th weekend.  A $110M US total wouldn’t be likely to bring the expensive film to profit (international is at only $72.6M after a $3.6M weekend in 66 markets), but it would be respectable.

FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA (Warners) dropped 42% to $2.4M in its 4th weekend, and may barely hit $70M in the US.  Although things were better overseas, with $97M after a $5.3M weekend in 78 territories), the film will still end up in deep red ink.

THE FALL GUY (Universal, also on VOD) was down 42% to $1.5M, and should cross $90M in the US.  It has a similar $82M oveseas after a $1M weekend in 81 markets.

LIMITED RELEASE:  FIREBRAND (Roadside) had a $500 weekend per-theater average at 442 theaters.  ROBOT DREAMS (Neon) expanded to 39 with a $2100 average.  I USED TO BE FUNNY (Utopia) averaged $1100 at 39.  GHOSTLIGHT (IFC) averaged $13K at 3.

NEXT WEEKEND:  The quasi-indie THE BIKERIDERS (Focus/Universal) will have the chance to make a splash.  Limited releases include KINDS OF KINDNESS (Searchlight/Disney).
