It was a good night for both broadcast and cable last night.

With the benefit of a huge football overrun that lasted until the very last moment before the awards were set to begin, the EMMY AWARDS had a 4.9 rating in 18-49s, more than a full point higher than last year’s 3.8 in overnight ratings.

Meanwhile, on cable, the next-to-last BREAKING BAD hit a new high with 6.6M total viewers, 4.3M of them in the 18-49 demo (which should give it a 3.4 in the demo when final numbers are released tomorrow).  The only thing that could conceivably keep next week’s series finale from going even higher is the season premiere of Homeland airing directly against it on Showtime.

And thinking of Showtime, the excitement everywhere else didn’t hurt the series finale of DEXTER and the season finale of RAY DONOVAN at all, as Dexter left the building with an all-time high 2.8M viewers (remember, Showtime is available in only 1/3 of US households) and Ray Donovan also hit a high with 1.4M, topping the Season 1 finale of Homeland.

Over at Lifetime, the season finale of DEVIOUS MAIDS set its own high, with 3M total viewers.

In fact, the only attraction to be hurt by all the competition last night was NFL SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL on NBC.  Oh, it won the night as it always does, but its 6.9 rating in 18-49s was half a point lower than last week’s game.
