Opening at over 3,350 theaters Friday (slightly above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Ender’s Game from Lionsgate/Summit should average $8,600 per theater for the weekend (for a $28.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] Early reviews are positive at RottenTomatoes: 69% positive so far. Ender’s Game is on track for $82 million domestic.
Opening at around 2,800 theaters Friday, Free Birds from Relativity should average $5,900 per theater for the weekend (for a $16.5 million opening three-day weekend). Early reviews are not promising: 29% positive with a small sample size. Free Birds should be headed for $59 million domestic.
Opening at around 3,500 theaters Friday, Last Vegas from CBS Films should average a below par $4,200 per theater for the weekend (for a $14.5 million opening three-day weekend). Critical sentiment is divided: 47% positive at RottenTomatoes. Last Vegas should be headed for $45 million domestic.
