AFTERNOON UPDATE: TROPHY WIFE became even more disastrous in final numbers, falling to a 1.1, which makes it one of the lowest-rated in-season, non-Friday series ever to get a back order. It’s hard to imagine ABC keeping it where it is for the remainder of the season. The only other afternoon change was a 0.1 rise for THE VOICE.
TUESDAY CABLE: SONS OF ANARCHY was the dominant player once again (although with THE VOICE airing at 10, it didn’t win the hour), up 0.2 from last week to 2.4. Along with the usual BIG BANG THEORY and FAMILY GUY/AMERICAN DAD reruns, there was also strength from Discovery’s MOONSHINERS at 1.1 and both Comedy Central’s TOSH.0 and Adult Swim’s ROBOT CHICKEN at 1.0.
More cracks in ABC’s Tuesday. (Note: ratings for ABC, CBS and NBC (especially after 9 pm) could be impacted slightly by local pre-emptions for election coverage in NY/NJ, VA and CO).
ABC: Airing for the first time after a rerun week, AGENTS OF SHIELD eroded further to a new low 2.5, no longer serious competition for CBS in the hour and not all that far ahead of NBC. (However, on the creative side the show took an important step last night, devoting an episode to the supporting characters Fitz and Simmons as it tries to build its ensemble. The result was the best episode since the pilot.) With SHIELD down, the rest of the line-up followed, as the newly-backordered THE GOLDBERGS hit a new low 1.5 and TROPHY WIFE was even worse at 1.2–in both cases, down 0.2 from last week when they followed the rerun SHIELD. A pre-CMA IN THE SPOTLIGHT WITH ROBIN ROBERTS did even worse than recent Shark Tank reruns have done in the 10PM slot with 0.7.
FOX: Returning from preemptions, DADS and BROOKLYN NINE-NINE held even at 1.4/1.6. The news was better in the 9PM hour, as both NEW GIRL (with an episode that was goofy even by that show’s standards) and THE MINDY PROJECT rose 0.2 to 2.0/1.5.
NBC: THE BIGGEST LOSER was up a healthy 0.3 from last week (when it had to face a special X Factor) to 2.1. But as on Monday, THE VOICE dropped with the arrival of live episodes, with a special 2-hour outing that was down 0.3 to 3.6 (still the highest-rated show of the night and enough to give NBC the win). NBC is already heavily promoting next week’s return of Chicago Fire after several preemptions, and that result will be very interesting.
CBS: NCIS was down 0.1 to 2.9, and NCIS LA fell 0.2 to 2.4. Facing The Voice for the second straight week, PERSON OF INTEREST held at 1.9.
CW: A down night, as THE ORIGINALS slipped 0.1 to 0.9 and SUPERNATURAL fell 0.2 to 0.9. However, it was still good news for CW that Originals is running steady with Supernatural.
Tonight’s big event is the CMA AWARDS on ABC, which last year aired on a Thursday and had a 3.8 rating. The rest of the networks air regular programming, with DATELINE in NBC’s open 10PM slot.
