The Television Critics Association gatherings are taking place over the next few weeks, which means a steady flow of scheduling updates amidst the press conferences promoting upcoming shows. Today was HBO’s day at the podium, and its major announcement was that the upcoming 5th season of BOARDWALK EMPIRE will be its final one, likely for a mixture of creative reasons (Terence Winter, the show’s creator/showrunner, is the screenwriter of The Wolf of Wall Street and may be ready to move on to other things), decent but unexciting ratings, and a high production cost.
HBO also announced that Season 4 of GAME OF THRONES (which isn’t ending anytime soon) debuts on April 6, followed by the season premiere of VEEP and the series premiere of the new SILICON VALLEY half-hour. The nonfiction series VICE returns on March 14, and the very high-profile TV-movie THE NORMAL HEART will air in May, although the specific date hasn’t yet been disclosed.
Lifetime also had its time today, and announced that DEVIOUS MAIDS will return for its 2d season on April 20.
