Weekend Box Office Predictions JAN 31-FEB 2

Weekend #5 of 2014 is looking like $74 million for the top 12 films, a significant 17% below the average for this challenging weekend the past few years.  Super Bowl weekend is always a tough one, with the distraction of the largest TV event of the year on Sunday and weak movies released in its wake.  The last two years, this weekend has produced Warm Bodies, Bullet to the Head, Woman in Black, Chronicle and Big Miracle.  This weekend feels exactly on track with that assortment of films.

Opening at around 2,800 theaters Friday (slightly below the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), That Awkward Moment from Universal should average a sub-par $4,400 per theater for the weekend (for a $12.5 million opening weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are weak: 22% positive so far. That Awkward Moment is on track for around $32 million domestic.

Opening at around 2,500 theaters Friday, Labor Day from Paramount should average a very weak $2,300 per theater for the weekend (for a $5.5 million opening weekend). Early reviews are middling: 55% positive so far. Labor Day is on track for around $13 million domestic.

The Domestic Total is a very early ShowBuzzDaily projection of the total North American gross, based on the Weekend Forecasts.

Ride Along will remain the #1 holdover, and the only one above $10 million for the weekend.
