WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD. The studios are starting to separate from each other as we approach the midpoint of the year. 20th Century Fox is nearing $1.9 billion worldwide box office to date. Fox had a decent week with an additional $148 million worldwide (mostly from the domestic release of The Fault in Our Stars). Warner Brothers is just below $1.6 billion worldwide for 2014 to date, boasting the best week of all studios ($199 million worldwide). Edge of Tomorrow enters the chart below with $197 million ($86 million for a projected domestic total and $111 overseas to date), and that number will push over $300 million easily with additional overseas business in the next few weeks. Disney is in third place now, knocking on the door of $1.5 billion worldwide. Disney’s $117 million this week is mostly a function of additional overseas grosses for Maleficent. Sony remains at $1.35 billion, with virtually no revenue currently domestically or overseas. Universal, Paramount and Lionsgate/Summit remain under $1 billion worldwide so far in 2014. The negative weekly numbers for two of those studios reflect some downward adjustments in domestic totals.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is still running 2% ahead of last year and still only 1% above the average for this point the past four years ($3.949 billion). Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed just over $10.5 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.

(The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
