WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD. Universal and Sony each had weeks over $100 million, mostly because of the domestic releases of The Boxtrolls (Focus) and The Equalizer. But both movies remain mired toward the bottom of the worldwide studio rankings.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is still running -7% behind last year and -5% below the average for this point the past four years ($7.378 billion). Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed almost $18.5 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.
A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year. (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)

The past six weeks in North America are now -8% behind the same period last year (a bit worse than the -7% last week and the -6% pace two weeks ago) and now -10% below the four-year average for the similar six-week period ($0.814 billion).

WORLDWIDE GROSSES BY FILM TITLE. The Equalizer enters the 2014 worldwide chart at #42 (with significant overseas upside to move it up the rankings) and The Boxtrolls starts at #48 (with moderate overseas prospects).
