WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD. Fox rolls on, running away with 2014 worldwide with another $144 million this week (mostly from continued strong overseas grosses from Maze Runner and Gone Girl). Fox is a huge #1 with almost $4.2 billion for the year to date worldwide. The next best week came from lowly Universal ($134 million worldwide the past week), although the almost-major studio remains mired in 6th place with just under $1.8 billion for the year. Most of Universal’s returns this week came from Dracula Untold, with still more overseas revenue from that film to come. Disney and Warner Brothers each added around $100 million this week. Disney got a lift from the domestic release of Alexander and the Terrible…Day and even more overseas revenue from the gift that keeps on giving: the wonderful Guardians of the Galaxy. Warner Brothers was supported to some extant by the tepid domestic opening of The Judge but mostly from very nice overseas returns from Annabelle.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is still running -6% behind last year and -4% below the average for this point the past four years ($7.641 billion). Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed over $19.3 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.

(The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)

The past six weeks in North America are now +5% ahead of the same period last year (a complete reversal from the -2% last week and the -8% pace two weeks ago) and now +6% ahead of the four-year average for the similar six-week period ($0.738 billion).

WORLDWIDE GROSSES BY FILM TITLE. Dracula Untold enters the 2014 worldwide chart at #41 (with even more overseas upside to come) and Alexander and Terrible…Day starts at #54 (with limited overseas prospects).
