THE NIGHT SHIFT had an unusually perky night. In addition, note that in the post-midnight realm, LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN had a solid start with older audiences, premiering at 1.4 in total households, ahead of the 1.2 for LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS. In 18-49s, though, Meyers was ahead of Corden, 0.5 to 0.4. The new show was up over the numbers that Craig Ferguson had been averaging, but that’s not much of a surprise, considering that this was a heavily-promoted premiere. As with all late-night shows, the result that counts will be the one earned over time.
DEMOGRAPHIC DETAIL: For each broadcast program (or hour segment), the chart below displays preliminary key advertiser demographics (adult 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings), audience skews (women 18-49, men 18-49 and adults 50+ shares) and total viewership (thousands of people over the age of 2).
Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.
NBC: Even though THE VOICE was down 0.1 to 3.3, and there was fresh competition on the other networks, THE NIGHT SHIFT had a 0.3 jump from last week to 1.6. The show’s rating was still largely fueled by its lead-in (the 10PM/10:30PM numbers were 1.8/1.3), but nevertheless an encouraging sign.
FOX: THE FOLLOWING was a slightly better lead-in for itself than last week’s GOTHAM rerun had been, as its 2 hours were at 1.2/1.2, up 0.1.
CBS: 2 BROKE GIRLS and MIKE & MOLLY were both down 0.2, to 1.9/1.8, and it’s worth noting that the MIKE decline was in spite of the fact that its lead-in was 0.2 higher than last week’s BIG BANG THEORY rerun. SCORPION held at 2.0, and NCIS: LA dropped 0.2 to 1.6.
ABC: DANCING WITH THE STARS and CASTLE were each down 0.1, to 2.0/1.4.
CW: Reruns at 0.3/0.3.
Tonight’s line-up features the season finale of THE MINDY PROJECT on FOX (not being given much of a boost by a rerun NEW GIRL lead-in), as well as the all-important second episodes of ONE BIG HAPPY on NBC and IZOMBIE on CW.
COMPARISONS TO SIMILAR NIGHTS: Preliminary adult 18-49 ratings versus the same night last year and same night last week.
