Weekend Box Office Predictions 6.19-21.2015

Weekend #25 of 2015 is looking like $202 million for the top 12 films this weekend, significantly above the norm for the same weekend the past few years and way above last year’s misfire on this weekend (see comparisons below).

Inside Out from Disney should open with a $70.0 million three-day weekend. Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are unanimous: 100% positive overall so far at a meaningful 50+ reviews currently. Inside Out is on track for around $235 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $445 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $680 million.

Dope from Open Road Films should open with a $7.9 million three-day weekend. Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are quite positive: 90% positive overall so far. Dope is on track for around $29 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $15 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $44 million.

Box Office Volume

For the past four years, the top 12 films this weekend have averaged $175 million total (Friday-Sunday), ranking 8th of 52 weeks. Last year, this weekend’s total was an atypically low $139 million (while 2013 was $232 million, 2012 was $157 million and 2011 was $170 million). This Friday-Sunday is looking like a very respectable $202 million, up +16% from the multi-year average for the comparable weekend and up +45% from the same weekend last year, which was quite soft.
