Weekend Box Office Predictions 8.28-30.2015

Weekend #35 of 2015 is looking like $68 million for the top 12 films this weekend, significantly below the norm for this weekend (see comparisons below).

We Are You Friends from Warner Brothers should open with a $9.0 million three-day weekend. Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are soft: 37% positive overall so far. We Are Your Friends is on track for around $26 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $9 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $35 million.

No Escape from Weinstein Company should open with a $7.0 million Friday-Sunday weekend and about $9 million Wednesday through Sunday.  Critics are not impressed: 40% positive reviews so far.  No Escape is on track for around $16 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $7 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $23 million.

The War Room from Sony should open with a $5.5 million three-day weekend.  No reviews yet for this film.  War Room is on track for around $8 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $1 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $9 million.

Straight Outta Compton will be the #1 holdover this weekend by far and still the #1 film overall with almost no competition from the new films.

For the past four years, the top 12 films this weekend have averaged $87 million total (Friday-Sunday), ranking 47th of 52 weeks. Last year, this weekend’s total was $88 million (while 2013 was $93 million, 2012 was $86 million and 2011 was $82 million). This Friday-Sunday is looking like a really weak $68 million, down -22% from the multi-year average for the comparable weekend and down -23% from the same weekend last year.
