HBO’s True Blood premiered its new season with a 2.9 rating with Adults 18-49, about where it left off last season. The final four episodes last year (Aug 21-Sep 11, 2011): 3.1– 2.9– 2.4– 2.8. At the other end of the scripted spectrum, HBO’s comedies Veep and Girls (airing in the 10 pm hour after True Blood on Sundays) play to a more niche crowd: a 0.6 and 0.5 rating respectively with Adults 18-49 and around one million viewers 2+. Meanwhile, Mad Men on AMC ended its season with a 0.9 young adult rating and 2.7 million, prompting AMC to breathlessly proclaim the episode the “most watched season finale in the series history”. This week’s winner of the World’s Tallest Midget Award.
A&E’s Storage Wars returned to Tuesdays at 10 with a good 1.9 rating, typical for that show. On History, Pawn Stars has cooled a bit to a 1.6 and 1.7 rating by half hour Monday at 10, after starting the season above a 2 rating (benefiting from the success of Hatfields & McCoys).
But the NBA remains the top dog this past week on cable, with the final games of the conference finals approaching a 5 rating with young adults. TNT and ESPN says goodbye to those ratings, as the NBA Finals shift to ABC tonight at 9 E/ 6 P.
