Don’t get too excited about that increase in SMASH‘s 18-49 rating last night, because it just vanished.  In the final Nielsen numbers, Smash came back down to the same 2.3 number it had last week.  (Castle was also lowered a tenth of a point.)

The lower number is nothing to panic about.  The final numbers also make clear that FOX’s NASCAR coverage ran in most of the country until after 11:30PM, and since FOX doesn’t usually even broadcast past 10PM, that means the entire hour was a mess for purposes of analysis.  Plus, equal with last week means “stable,” and stable is good–especially with Smash‘s upscale numbers.   But… stable isn’t quite as good as “up.”
To be continued next week.  As we noted this morning, NBC will have the advantage that night, because both Hawaii 5-0 and Castle will be in repeats, making it a better opportunity for Smash to build.
