>UPDATED NUMBERS FOR NBC THROUGHOUT.

FOX had the late Divisional playoff game (that goes until about 8 pm) this year and took full advantage of it, successfully previewing new comedy Napoleon Dynamite twice.  NBC will be in second place on the night because of the Golden Globe awards.  The 3.6 rating noted below in the table (for the red carpet arrivals show and the awards show itself) will be adjusted upward tomorrow to account for the live viewing in the Pacific and Mountain time zones.   NBC’s 7-11 pm rating is now a preliminary 4.2 rating, reflecting an expected upward adjustment of the 8-11 pm Globes awards ceremony to a 5.0 rating.  The 7-8 pm red carpet arrivals show (currently a 1.9 rating) will probably be adjusted down a bit — so NBC’s nightly rating will probably settle at a 4.1.

FOX led the broadcast networks last night with a preliminary 8.0 Adult 18-49 rating from 7-10 pm, thanks to the end of the NFC Divisional playoff game (New York Giants upsetting the Green Bay Packers), an amazing Simpsons rating, and two solid ratings for the new animated comedy Napoleon Dynamite.  In the preliminary fast nationals, FOX averaged a 14.3 Adult 18-49 rating from 7-8 pm for the end of the game and analysis.  This number should go up to around a 16 rating in the official nationals.  The Simpsons scored a season high 6.8 rating and set the table for the premiere of Napoleon Dynamite (4.6) at 8:30.  Family Guy (4.4) will set a new season high, and a second episode of Napoleon Dynamite (3.6) at 9:30 put up another good number.  Last year on this night, CBS had the late playoff game and FOX averaged a 2.5 rating with a mix of original and repeat comedies:  Simpsons (1.1), American Dad (1.7), Simpsons (3.1), Bob’s Burgers (2.5), Family Guy (3.7) and Cleveland Show (2.7).

Well, it wasn’t Sunday Night Football, but the Golden Globes gave NBC a credible rating for the night and avoided another embarrassment like last week’s The Firm.  The Globes awards ceremony from 8-11 pm averaged a preliminary 4.2 rating, but this number will be adjusted upward (to reflect the live viewing in the Pacific time zone from 5-8 pm local time).  We are estimating the rating will go up to a 4.8 or 4.9.  The 8-11 awards show is now looking like a 5.0 rating, still somewhat below the 5.2 official rating for last year’s show.

ABC had a relatively quiet night, averaging a 2.1 rating from 7-11 pm.  America’s Funniest Home Videos set a season low at 7 pm, although Once Upon a Time held at okay levels at 8 pm despite the heavy female competition from the Golden Globes.  However, Desperate Housewives and Pan Am turned in season-low levels.  Last year on this night: AFHV (1.1), Extreme Makeover Home Edition (2.0), Desperate Housewives (3.1) and Brothers & Sisters (2.0).

Without the late football game this year, CBS averaged a 2.0 from 7-11 pm (compared to a 6.5 on this night last year).  60 Minutes and The Good Wife originals hit season lows (CSI Miami was a repeat), but Undercover Boss returned to Sunday night with a very solid 3.0 rating at 8 pm, the highlight of the night for CBS.  Last year on this night: AFC Divisional playoff coverage 7-8 pm (17.5), 60 Minutes (4.0), Undercover Boss (3.4) and CSI Miami (2.4).
