>ABC premiered the “comedy” Work It, and America did not turn out for it.  CBS went back to basics and brought back its regular Tuesday schedule (all in originals), winning the night unlike the same night last year, when it let Paula Abdul mess up its powerhouse Tuesday schedule.  NBC also went with originals of its Tuesday schedule (like it did last year), but the bottom has fallen out of Biggest Loser and Parenthood (as well as the entire non-sports NBC schedule).

01.04.2011   2.2    2.9    1.7    1.5

CBS came out with all originals last night and got very solid results, especially earlier in the evening.  CBS averaged a 3.4 rating with Adults 18-49 for the night, with near season highs for NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles, while Unforgettable was in the middle of its range this season.  Last year CBS struggled with only a 2.2 rating for the night with a two-hour special Live to Dance from 8-10 pm (2.4) and a repeat NCIS special at 10 pm (1.7).

ABC averaged a 2.0 for the night.  Last Man Standing returned from holiday hibernation with a fairly low 2.4 rating, and the heavily promoted and massively reviled Work It fumbled the lead in and premiered with a 2.0 rating.  It was truly awful in every regard, and be sure to read Mitch Salem’s scathing reviewCelebrity Wife Swap settled into its time period with a 2.2 rating at 9 pm, a night after its preview telecast scored a 2.4 rating Monday at 10.  Body of Proof underwhelmed yet again, matching its season low.  Still, this train wreck of a night is actually up over the same night last year, which averaged a 1.7 rating: No Ordinary Family (1.9), V (2.1) and Detroit 187 (1.2).

ABC Tues           High Low  1129 12.6 1213 1220 1227 01.3

NBC took the CBS approach and returned its Tuesday line up in originals, averaging a 2.1 rating from 8-11 pm.  Unfortunately, the same line up on this night last year averaged a first-place 2.9 rating.  Last year on this night (Tuesday, January 4, 2011), Biggest Loser premiered at a 3.3 rating, one full rating point above this cycle’s start.  And Parenthood looked like a runaway hit on this night last year with a 2.3 rating.  Ouch.

NBC Tues     High Low  1129 12.6 1213 1220 1227 01.3

Parenthood   2.2  1.7  2.1  —   —   —   0.7R 1.7*

FOX continues in sleep mode, saving originals until American Idol arrives and jump starts the entire schedule.  Its line up of repeats averaged a 1.0 rating last night, down significantly from the 1.5 rating on this night last year: Glee repeat (1.7) and Million Dollar Drop (1.3).
