Behind the US/Worldwide Weekend Box Office – 3.13.2022

OPENINGS:  Despite being limited to 2 Saturday shows at 803 theaters, the (tape-delayed) live concert movie BTS: PERMISSION TO DANCE (Trafalgar) earned $6.8M at the US box office.  Even with an average $35 ticket price, that’s an impressive achievement, and the international result was even more remarkable at $25.8M.  This was the highest-grossing movie event of its kind in history, and will certainly lead to similar presentations.

The Indian-language RADHE SHYAM (Alerion) arrived in the US with $1.9M at 800 theaters, although that was extremely front-loaded, with 2/3 of the weekend’s attendance on Friday.

HOLDOVERS:  THE BATMAN (DC/Warners) faced no direct competition in its 2nd weekend, and dropped 51% to $66M, in line with expectations.  It has clear sailing for the rest of March with only The Lost City in its path, and should pass $400M in the US, which would make it the #3 film in the Batman franchise, and it might even beat The Dark Knight Rises‘ $448.1M, which would put it behind only The Dark Knight‘s $533.3M.  Overseas, The Batman has $224.7M. with China to come next week.

The other holdovers barely moved.  UNCHARTED (Columbia/Sony) lost 17% to $9.3M in its 4th weekend, on its way to $140M in the US, and with $187.9M overseas after an $11.2M weekend in 64 markets.

DOG (UA/MGM, also on VOD) slipped 13% to $5.3M in Weekend 4, and should pass $60M in the US.  It’s earned $6.4M overseas.

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME (Marvel/Columbia/Sony) continued its march to $800M in the US, down 10% to $4.1M in its 13th weekend.  It’s reached $1.08B overseas.

DEATH ON THE NILE (20th/Disney) was down 9% to $2.5M in its 5th weekend, but would still need to stretch to see $50M in the US.  It has $78.3M overseas.

SING 2 (Illumination/Universal) shed just 3% to $1.6M in its 12th weekend, and should pass $160M in the US.  Overseas, it’s notched $211.1M.

JACKASS FOREVER (MTV/Paramount) dropped 23% to $1.1M in Weekend 6, and may get to $60M in the US, with $19.2M overseas.

LIMITED RELEASE:  ALL MY FRIENDS HATE ME (Super LTD) opened with a $1400 weekend per-theater average at 27.  The documentary I AM HERE (Blue Fox) averaged $300 at 82.

NEXT WEEKEND:  A trio of low-budget arrivals are unlikely to give much pause to The Batman:  crime drama THE OUTFIT (Focus/Universal), and thrillers X (A24) and UMMA (Stage 6/Sony).
