The 43rd weekend of the year is looking like $104 million for the top 12 films, 22% from the multi-year average for this weekend. And on its fourth weekend, Gravity will be knocked out of the top spot by…..Johnny Knoxville? That’s what it looks like.
Opening at over 3,000 theaters Friday (slightly above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa from Paramount should average $10,200 per theater for the weekend (for a $30.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had an opening weekend of $5,300 per theater.] Early reviews are positive at RottenTomatoes: 83% positive so far, but note that fewer than 20 reviews have been counted so far. Bad Grandpa is on track for $83 million domestic.
Opening at around 3,000 theaters Friday, The Counselor from Twentieth Century Fox should average a below par $4,500 per theater for the weekend (for a soft $13.5 million opening three-day weekend). No early reviews yet at RottenTomatoes: the film is clearly being hidden from critics. The Counselor should be headed for $28 million domestic.
