On the TV side of its fence, this morning’s Screen Actors Awards nominations (a complete list is here) were conservative to the point of being downright boring. With the exception of House of Cards and the revived Arrested Development, not a single show or performer was nominated for a new 2013-14 series, while 30 Rock, which has been off the air since last Spring, rose from the dead for nominations in 3 major categories. It’s not that Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones and Homeland among dramas, and 30 Rock, Arrested Development, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Veep are unworthy, but this is literally a list that could have been compiled from episodes piled up on a DVR. In the year that brought us Orange Is the New Black, The Americans and Orphan Black, among other exciting arrivals, it’s a dull and disappointing group.
Hopefully tomorrow’s Golden Globe choices will shake things up a bit.
