Picking five dramas as the best of television (or “television,” as it’s more properly referred to these days) is a tough task, and the Writers Guild just announced its nominees, all of them worthy and yet hardly the only possible choices: BREAKING BAD, THE GOOD WIFE, HOMELAND, HOUSE OF CARDS and MAD MEN. At this point, we’re probably over the shock that Netflix has landed one of the slots, and the bigger surprise may be that a broadcast network snuck in, thanks to the incredibly fine season The Good Wife is having this year.
The Comedy choices were for the most part made up of usual suspects: 30 ROCK, MODERN FAMILY, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, PARKS & RECREATION and VEEP. Network TV is still much stronger here, but of course 30 Rock is done, and nothing else on the networks is stepping up as an obvious substitute. One might note the obvious: Orange is an awfully dark and violent “comedy,” presumably categorized that way by Netflix in order to increase its chances of a nomination.
