As we continue to tally the films released wide in 2013, Disney has pulled ahead of Warner Brothers in worldwide box office for the 2013 slate (now an $18 million margin out of over $9 billion between the two rival studios).  Disney continues to benefit mightily from Frozen, both in North America and overseas.  For a complete ranking of 2013 films individually by worldwide performance click here.

We will begin tracking the 2014 Studio Scorecard in mid-February.

Studio YTD 2013 as of 2014 Feb 2

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2014 is now running 8% ahead of last year but now 2% below the average for the past four years ($693 million).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed $1.771 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office.  The past week at the North American box office has been truly awful: $97 million between January 27 and February 2, 2014.  That is a relatively small -13% from last year’s same week ($111 million for January 28 to February 3, 2013) but a full -34% from the average for this week between 2010 and 2013 ($147 million).

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
