Opening at 3,172 theaters Friday (somewhat above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Lucy from Universal should average $11,200 per theater for the weekend (for a $35.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had a three-day opening weekend of $5,300 per theater for a $14.5 million weekend.] Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are a decent 67% positive so far. Lucy is on track for around $105 million domestic. Overseas the film could gross about $135 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $240 million.
Opening at over 3,500 theaters Friday, Hercules from Paramount should average $6,300 per theater for the weekend (for a $21.5 million opening weekend). Critical sentiment is also positive in the early going: 71% positive so far. Hercules is on track for around $68 million domestic, with a potential for another $147 million total overseas. Worldwide box office target: $215 million.
Opening at over 1,800 theaters Friday, And So It Goes from Clarius Entertainment should average $2,100 per theater for the weekend (for a $3.5 million opening weekend). Critical sentiment is weak: 33% positive so far in early reviews. And So It Goes is on track for around $9 million domestic, with a potential for another $1 million total overseas. Worldwide box office target: $10 million.
