WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD.  Universal remains a dominant #1, growing even more this week.  Unfriended helped a little with its domestic opening, but the big reason for the weekly again this week was Furious 7 which is exploding overseas.  As for the other openers this weekend, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 does not significantly improve Sony’s fortunes, nor does Monkey Kingdom for Disney.

Lionsgate/Summit is showing a negative week because the overseas tally for Insurgent was overstated last week.  That error has been corrected this week in the Studio Scorecard chart below and the individual Film Rankings at the bottom of the post.

YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2015 to date is now +4% above last year and +8% above the average for this point the past four years ($2.489 billion).  Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed over $7.6 billion worldwide when we add overseas box office (that’s +13% ahead of the comparable worldwide box office last year at this stage).

A reminder: we define the start of each year as the first Monday after New Year’s Day, and our year ends on the Sunday after New Year’s Day the following calendar year.  (The most recent week’s numbers are based on weekend estimates, which are usually at worst a couple of percentage points off from the final weekend tallies.)
