Behind the US/Worldwide Weekend Box Office – 11.6.2022

OPENINGS:  ONE PIECE FILM: RED (Crunchyroll/Sony) opened at $9.5M, on the low end of recent national anime releases compared to Jujutsu Kaisen‘s $18M and Dragon Ball Super‘s $21.1M.  As is typical for the genre, it was extremely frontloaded, earning more than 50% of its weekend total by the end of Friday.  However, its US result was marginal in the context of its $120.2M in Japan.  (It also has an additional $12M from other overseas territories.)

THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN (Searchlight/Disney) had an OK expansion into wide release with $2M at 895 theaters, a weekend per-theater average of $2200.

ARMAGEDDON TIME (Focus/Universal) was far weaker as it widened to 1006 theaters with $800K, an unimpressive $800 per-theater average.

HOLDOVERS:  In its final weekend without significant competition, BLACK ADAM (DC/New Line/Warners) continued to hold well, down 33% to $18.5M, and on track for $185M in the US depending on how well it sustains once Black Panther 2 arrives.  Overseas, it has $182.3M after a $25.4M weekend.  Black Adam‘s problem, as we’ve noted before, is its $300M+ cost, which makes its profitability questionable even at this box office level.

TICKET TO PARADISE (Universal) had a terrific hold, down just 14% to $8.5M 3rd weekend.  It could reach $70M in the US, unless its availability on VOD starting Tuesday slows it down in theaters.  It also has $90.5M overseas.

The remarkable SMILE (Paramount) will hit $100M in the US next week, after a 26% decline to $4M in its 6th weekend.  Overseas, it’s reached $103.8M after a $5.1M weekend in 62 territories.

Despite heavy horror competition, PREY FOR THE DEVIL (Lionsgate) held fairly well in its 2nd weekend, down 46% to $3.9M and on its way to $25M in the US.  It has $4.5M overseas.

LYLE, LYLE, CROCODILE (Columbia/Sony) had the family audience to itself, and it rose 23% to $3.4M in its 5th weekend, and might pass $45M before it’s done.  Its overseas total is $27.2M.

TILL (Orion/MGM/Amazon) dropped 32% to $1.9M in its 2nd wide weekend, and will hope to hold its theaters for the long haul through awards season.  It hasn’t yet opened overseas.

HALLOWEEN ENDS (Blumhouse/Universal, also on Peacock) was hit hard by the passing of its titular holiday, down 66% to $1.4M in its 4th weekend, and unlikely to hit $70M in the US.  It has $39.5M overseas.

The sleeper TERRIFIER 2 (Cinedigm) was down 36% to $1.2M in its 5th weekend, and even if it doesn’t get past $15M in the US, it’s already wildly profitable given its tiny costs.  Its limited international release is under $250K to date.

LIMITED RELEASE:  AFTERSUN (A24) expanded to 45 theaters with a soft $2800 per-theater weekend average.  SALVATORE: SHOEMAKER OF DREAMS (Sony Classics) opened with a $3300 average at 2 arthouses.

NEXT WEEKEND:  The box office finally gets the blockbuster its needed since summer with the arrival of BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER (Marvel/Disney).  In limited release, Steven Spielberg’s THE FABELMANS (Universal) will begin its Oscar run.
