> FOOTLOOSE has the advantage of facing no new direct competition on Friday. That, along with what should be fairly good word of mouth, could give it some legs in the marketplace. THE THING, on the other hand, had a make-or-break weekend this week with PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 about to hit, and it’s not going […]
WORLDWIDE STUDIO SCORECARD. Here is an updated look at the 2017 film slates by studio. YEAR TO DATE BOX OFFICE. Looking at North American box office, 2017 to date is still down -2% from last year and still +1% above the average for this point the past four years ($8.160 billion). Over the same period, Hollywood films have grossed $22.7 […]
Based on preliminary numbers at Deadline (which, it should be noted, were fairly overoptimistic last night), Saturday’s results were in line with Friday’s lead. MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (Disney/Pixar) will easily take the weekend after a decent 20% Saturday bump, for what should be a $45M weekend, down only 45% from opening weekend–a better performance than […]
Oz the Great and Powerful joins the worldwide chart just outside the top 10. With $70 million overseas to date, the foreign total should approach $300 million, making $500 million worldwide an achievable goal (behind Life of Pi in 5th place). The other films were relatively quiet overseas this past week. The next best was A Good Day to […]
Weekend #49 of 2015 is looking like a decent $94 million for the top 12 films this weekend, actually better than what we usually see on one of the slowest weekends of the year (see comparisons below). Krampus from Universal should open with $12.0 million Friday-Sunday. The film is on track for around $26 million domestic in its run. Overseas the film […]
The third weekend of 2013 should total about $106 million for the top 12 films, down a bit from the same weekend the past few years. Three movies open Friday and an Oscar hopeful expands into wide release, but no film should gross much more than $15 million Friday-Sunday. Opening in about 2,400 theaters Friday, […]
TOMORROWLAND (Disney) appears to be heading for the low end of expectations, earning around $10M on Friday (including less than $1M from Thursday night shows) according to preliminary numbers at Deadline. Although exit polls are far from infallible, family movies usually score well, and its B grade is a sign that word-of-mouth may be […]
Continuing to wield a mighty hammer at the boxoffice, THE AVENGERS on Monday had the highest non-holiday, non-summer Monday of all time with $18.9M. That handily beat the previous record holder Avatar, which had $16.4M on December 21, 2009. Avengers has already grossed $700M worldwide, with much more to come.
