PRISONERS (Warners) had a strong Saturday at the box office, according to preliminary numbers at Deadline. The dark thriller increased by 28% on its second day to $9M, and should reach $21-22M for the weekend. That would put it right in between Argo ($19.5M) and The Town ($23.8M), the successes Warners hopes to emulate with Prisoners‘ late September release pattern. Of course, percentages can be misleading: witness BATTLE OF THE YEAR (Screen Gems/Sony), which technically zoomed 45% on Saturday, but at such low numbers that it’s still heading for a terrible $4M weekend.
INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 (FilmDistrict) will be down over 60% for the weekend to around $15M, while THE FAMILY (Relativity) will fall a softer but still big 50% to $7M. Other holdovers are in line with their Friday results, although it will be interesting to see if INSTRUCTIONS NOT INCLUDED (Lionsgate/Televisa) continues to have the enormous Sunday success (last Sunday was up 50% from Saturday) it’s enjoyed so far.
