EARLY WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: “Spider-Man” Slips But Still Dominates

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (Sony) didn’t succeed in outperforming other recent superhero movies in its Saturday matinees, and probably won’t supplant Captain America 2 as the year’s #1 opening to date, but it’s still rolling in money.  According to preliminary numbers at Deadline, Amazing 2 dropped 4-6% on Saturday (by comparison, Captain 2 fell 6%, Iron Man 3 dropped 10%, and Thor 2 was up about 0.5%), giving it roughly $34M for the day, and probably $90-92M for the weekend, not quite at Captain 2‘s $95M level.  The blockbuster should also be having a huge weekend overseas, including a Sunday opening in China.

Far, far below was THE OTHER WOMAN (20th), with $6M on Saturday and a $14-15M weekend, down about 40% from last weekend.  HEAVEN IS FOR REAL (TriStar/Sony), CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (Disney/Marvel) and RIO 2 (20th/Blue Sky) all had roughly $3.5M Saturdays and should be at $7.5-8.5M for the weekend, with Heaven on top thanks to its strong Sunday sales.
