Holiday Box Office Volume: through January 2

For the 18 days December 16-January 2, the top 10 films each day in North America have totaled $980 million, now -14% below last year’s record pace and +37% above the average since 2002.

December 31 has averaged $36.5 million since 2002 when the date has fallen on a weekday and $37.9 million when it has fallen on a weekend.  Last year December 31 (on a Thursday) added up to $46.9 million for the top 10. Saturday December 31, 2016 totaled $48.7 million for the top 10 (an above average New Year’s Eve on weekend).

January 1 has averaged $45.0 million since 2002 when the date has fallen on a weekday and $57.5 million when it has fallen on a weekend.  Last year January 1 (on a Friday) added up to $76.4 million for the top 10. Sunday January 1, 2017 totaled $56.6 million for the top 10 (a fairly typical New Year’s Day on a weekend).

January 2 has averaged $27.0 million since 2002 when the date has fallen on a weekday and $53.4 million on a weekend. Last year January 2 (on a Saturday) added up to $78.4 million for the top 10. Monday January 2, 2017 looks like $49.5 million for the top 10 films.

January 3 has averaged $15.7 million since 2002 when the date has fallen on a weekend and $43.4 million on a weekend. Last year January 3 (on a Sunday) added up to $44.7 million for the top 10.
