Thank God for overseas box office. One of the last great American exports is the Hollywood motion picture slate. The films released in the U.S. over the last four months have grossed $3.65 billion in North America, but they have taken in another $4.85 billion in foreign lands. There is no better example than Resident Evil: Retribution which will max out at about $53 million domestically (after its $21 million opening weekend here) but has already grossed $50 million overseas on its way to $210 million or $240 million outside North America. (The last Resident Evil grossed $236 million overseas.)
Or The Expendables 2 which has ballooned to $158 million overseas, challenging the $171 million for the original in the fine action series that will certainly not stop at two films.
