INTERNATIONAL BOX OFFICE through September 23

Two films had big very large gains overseas the past week: Resident Evil: Retribution (up $53 million to $103 million overseas to date) and Expendables 2 (up $28 million since last week to $186 million overseas to date).  The fifth in the Resident Evil series now stands at an estimated $145 million worldwide, with at least another $100 million in upside overseas, which would move up to just outside the top 10 for movies released the past four months.

The Expendables 2 has now matched the $274 million worldwide total for the first Expendables ($103 million domestic and $174 million overseas in August 2010).  Expendables 2 has some more upside left overseas, which could push it closer to $300 million worldwide, but it is not going to catch the movie above it in the rankings (Snow White and the Huntsman at almost $400 million).

All the movies opening or expanding wide this weekend in North America will have limited impact overseas in weeks to come (Trouble with the CurveEnd of Watch, House at the End of the Street, The Master, and Dredd 3D).
