NETWORK UPDATE:  NBC’s PRESEASON FOOTBALL game (Arizona vs. Oakland) adjusted up by half a point to 2.4 in final numbers.  In addition, BIG BROTHER gained 0.1, as did the 7:30PM BOB’S BURGERS rerun (which had a football overrun as its lead-in).

CABLE HIGHLIGHTS:  AMC’s FEAR THE WALKING DEAD was of course the behemoth of the night, falling a very acceptable 0.83 from its premiere to 4.1, down 15-20% across the board.

Completists want to know (of course) the rating of MTV’s VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS across all of the Viacom networks that simulcast the show, and we’re crazy enough to give it to you.  Here’s the rundown:  MTV:  2.59 (down a brutal 1.57 from last year, although it’s cushioned a bit by the other networks [however, there was also simulcasting last year], and preceded by 1.33 for the PRESHOW special, which was down 0.53 from last year); VH1:  0.52; TV Land:  0.48; Comedy Central: 0.39; BET:  0.33; MTV2:  0.17; CMT:  0.10; Centric:  0.06/118K; Logo:  0.03/82K; and VH1 Classics:  0.03/63K.

Outside of zombies, musical and otherwise, Adult Swim’s RICK & MORTY slipped 0.05 to 1.01, and AQUA TEEN HUNGER FOREVER fell 0.23 to 0.61, with YOUR PRETTY FACE was at 0.48.  NAKED & AFRAID (Discovery) dropped 0.18 to 0.89.  On TNT, THE LAST SHIP gained a tenth to 0.80, and the series finale of FALLING SKIES jumped 0.16 to 0.63.  VH1’s BASKETBALL WIVES, pushed back an hour to be the lead-in to the VMA telecast, merely lost a hundredth to 0.72.  THE STRAIN (FX) bounced back beautifully from last week, up 0.21 to 0.61.  On Bravo, DON’T BE TARDY rose 0.09 to 0.53, and MARRIED TO MEDICINE gained 0.02 to 0.43, with MANZOD WITH CHILDREN up 0.09 to 0.37.  On E!, I AM CAIT was up 0.03 to 0.43, and STEWARTS & HAMILTONS lost 0.02 to 0.11. 

On pay cable, Showtime’s RAY DONOVAN grew by 0.03 to 0.46, and MASTERS OF SEX was also up 0.03 to 0.13.  The final 2 hours of SHOW ME A HERO stayed at 0.10 for HBO.
