SUNDAY SPORTS.  The second game of an NBA doubleheader on ABC drew decent ratings Sunday (Lakers at Heat), hitting a 5.0 household rating and 10 share in the 54 markets which were able to be measured over the weekend.  (The blizzard in New England and the resulting many power outages forced Nielsen to take the ratings meters in Boston, Hartford and Providence out of service at various points Saturday and Sunday.)   The first game (Clippers at Knicks) was a mediocre draw, around the same household audience as the final round of PGA action at Pebble Beach.  With Tiger Woods not in the tournament, golf reverted to middling ratings.  Last year, Pebble Beach rated a 5.1 /10 on Sunday.  Everything else on the networks this weekend made little noise.

Local Market Ratings — Sunday

Despite an unusually bad record, the Lakers continue to out-rate the Clippers (about double the rating in the Los Angeles market for the Lakers compared to the earlier Clippers game).  But Miami wins the TV fan support award: a 13.9 rating and almost a 30 share watched the Heat in the Miami market.

But if the Clippers feel humbled by the Lakers, the world champion LA Kings should be embarrassed.  Just over a 1 rating in Los Angeles for the Kings at Red Wings, a game hurt by the early start time on the West Coast (9:30 am PT) and direct competition from the Clippers.

NBA ABC 1:00 Sun LA (Clippers) 4.7 12 NY (Knicks) 6.1 14

SATURDAY SPORTS.  The best rated network sports program on Saturday was the third round at Pebble Beach.  This year’s 1.8 rating and 4 share was down from a 2.8 / 6 for Pebble Beach’s third round last year.  Everything else on Saturday rated like a test pattern.  FOX made the right move by sitting out the weekend and not venturing down the path of rubgy, supercross and alpine sports that aren’t during the Olympics.
