“The Hunger Games” Box Office Track

We’re just a few hours away from the launch of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART I (Lionsgate) in over 4000 US theatres, not to mention 85 overseas territories (basically worldwide, with the exceptions of China–where the opening was originally scheduled for this week but abruptly pushed to 2015–Japan and India).  There’s very little question that Mockingjay will be the year’s #1 opening, easily topping the $100M premiere of Transformers:  Age of Extinction.  The studio’s hope is that Mockingjay will open at least in line with the $150M+ starts for both of the preceding Hunger Games installments, which were remarkably consistent considering that one opened in March and the other in November.  Here’s the day-by-day track that Mockingjay will be aiming for this weekend:

Thursday

Hunger Games (note:  midnight shows only):  $19.7M

Catching Fire (starting 8PM):  $25.3M

Friday (including Thursday night)

Hunger Games:  $63.1M

Catching Fire:  $71M

Saturday

Hunger Games:  $50.4M

Catching Fire:  $52.6M

Sunday

Hunger Games:  $34.9M

Catching Fire:  $34.5M

Total Weekend

Hunger Games:  $152.5M

Catching Fire:  $158.1M
