AFTERNOON UPDATE: Both BAD TEACHER and BLACK BOX stayed where they were this morning. As usual, THE BIG BANG THEORY came up 0.2, while THE MILLERS fell 0.1. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also climbed 0.1.
THURSDAY CABLE: TNT dominated again with the NBA PLAYOFFS, with a pair of 1.8 games. (The night’s 3rd game, though, airing on the much less widely distributed NBA Network, was only at 0.4.) VIKINGS (History), nearing its season finale, rose 0.3 to 1.2, while companion show PAWN STARS remained at 0.8. SIRENS (USA) held at 0.5.
Welcome to May Sweeps! The networks didn’t have much to celebrate last night.
CBS: Although it was by far the highest-rated show of the night, THE BIG BANG THEORY was down 0.4 to a season low 4.3. (It will likely get some of that back in afternoon adjustments.) THE MILLERS held even at 2.5. At 9PM, 2 1/2 MEN was up 0.1 to 2.5, and then BAD TEACHER had a decent hold, debuting at 2.1. If the show held there, CBS would probably give it some consideration, but most new shows decline in Week 2 once the marketing and hype are past, so we’ll see. ELEMENTARY was steady at 1.6, despite much lower 10PM competition at ABC than last week’s Scandal finale.
ABC: Without its Shonda Rhimes companion, GREY’S ANATOMY was down 0.3 to tie its series low 2.3. (The night started with 0.6 for a primetime JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE rerun of last week’s Scandal-centric Thursday show, which didn’t help.) The launch of BLACK BOX was hardly promising, but it could have been worse, a 1.5 that was in the running at 10PM. It was also a positive sign that the initial rating only declined 0.1 in the show’s 2d half-hour. However, as with Bad Teacher, it’s the Week 2 number that will be significant.
NBC: The hour-long PARKS & RECREATION season finale could only climb 0.1 from last week to 1.0. Things didn’t get better after that, with an SNL clip show special built around its pre-taped pieces at 1.0.
FOX: HELL’S KITCHEN held at 1.7, but AMERICAN IDOL slipped 0.1 to 1.8, and SURVIVING JACK stayed at 1.0.
CW: THE VAMPIRE DIARIES remained at last week’s series low 0.7, while REIGN climbed 0.1 to 0.5.
This being Sweeps, the networks have a mostly full load of original episodes tonight. That includes the season finale of LAST MAN STANDING on ABC (which is followed by a rerun episode of the show).
