Game 3 of the least-viewed World Series ever battled NCAA football (a very good Notre Dame vs Oklahoma game between two highly-ranked teams) last night. In the fast nationals, college football on ABC edged Game 3 on FOX 2.5 to 2.3 in Adult 18-49 rating, but we are projecting that in the official nationals the two live sporting events will tie with a 2.6 rating. With the San Francisco Giants involved, baseball will get the greater lift when the Pacific time zone is properly counted in the official ratings, allowing it to catch up to a regular season college football game. Nonetheless, another disastrous evening for the former National Pastime.
Notre Dame football is usually associated with NBC Sports, which has rights to the Fighting Irish home games. ABC carried the game because Oklahoma hosted last night’s contest. NBC will be very happy to get the Irish back on the air next Saturday (at 3:30 pm ET versus unranked Pittsburgh) as Notre Dame, now the #4 team in the country, continues its quest for an undefeated season. Oklahoma (now 5-2) tumbled to #14 from #8 as a result of last night’s loss.

World Series Game 3 Track. The previous record low for Game 3 in 2010 also involved the Giants, when the rating sunk all the way down to a 2.9. We are projecting a 2.6 in the official nationals for last night’s game — even if we are pessimistic in the size of the lift from the fast national rating, there is still a very good chance a new record low for Game 3 will be confirmed on Tuesday morning when the official nationals for Saturday are released.
