It was a great night for BIRDMAN, but not so much for ABC.
DEMOGRAPHIC DETAIL: For each broadcast program (or hour segment), the chart below displays preliminary key advertiser demographics (adult 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings), audience skews (women 18-49, men 18-49 and adults 50+ shares) and total viewership (thousands of people over the age of 2).
Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.
ABC: The combination of nominees that were mostly below the box office radar and eternal awards-show host Neil Patrick Harris sent THE ACADEMY AWARDS tumbling by 1.8, from last year’s 12.1 preliminary rating to 10.3. Time zone adjustments will likely raise that number a bit, but as that was the case last year as well, the overall rating will still be substantially down from 2014. The LIVE FROM THE RED CARPET pre-show, which ABC divides into separate half-hours, was at 4.6/6.1/8.3, and it can be expected to lose some steam in final numbers, especially in the final half-hour.
NBC: As usual on Oscar night, there was hardly any competition from the broadcast networks. DATELINE had an 0.9 that was steady with last week, and then reruns were at 0.4/0.5.
CBS: A run of 60 MINUTES fell 0.4 to 0.8, before the movie ACT OF VALOR carried the rest of the night at 0.6.
FOX: Reruns topped by a 1.2 for the 8PM run of THE SIMPSONS.
NBC will hope to turn around its recent fortunes tonight as THE VOICE returns for its spring cycle, followed by the return of respectable summer performer THE NIGHT SHIFT. FOX has the season finale of SLEEPY HOLLOW. CW preempts its line-up for THE WORLD DOG AWARDS.
COMPARISONS TO SIMILAR NIGHTS: Preliminary adult 18-49 ratings versus the same night last year and same night last week.

Sunday preliminary broadcast ratings: 60 Minutes and the CBS 7:00-7:30 half hour specifically inflated by 10 minutes of the end of Masters coverage from 7:00-7:10 pm (mostly the monumentally awkward and amazingly tense ceremony in “Butler Cabin,” where the Green Jacket is awarded).
