The Sked: Thursday Week 6

ABC easily won last night with a 3.8 adult 18-49 rating by ditching its regular lineup in favor of the 46th annual CMA Awards.  However, the CMAs were well below last year’s telecast, which aired on a Wednesday.  Any schedule or time time period change runs the risk of further accelerating the natural decline in network ratings.  Despite the increased competition from ABC, CBS maintained its usual Thursday rating (a 3.2).  FOX’s X Factor continues to struggle, placing the network in a weak third place on the night (2.3 rating).  And NBC did its usual 1.3 rating Thursday, although it was a much less expensive schedule (a repeat Voice for two hours instead of original single-camera comedies).

Thursday Night Football (Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego Chargers) on the NFL Network had limited impact on the fast nationals.  In San Diego (market rank #28, 0.94% of the US) CBS station KFMB 8 carried the game but only Big Bang Theory and possibly Two and a Half Men were inflated slightly by the end of the game.  In Kansas City (market rank #31, 0.82% of the US), the game aired on independent station KSMO 62 so no network programming was impacted in that market.

The X Factor is sick.  Down to a 2.3 last night with another live episode.  Not looking good.

Elementary recovered a bit, thanks to a slightly better lead-in from Person of Interest.  The 8-9 comedies continue to anchor the night impressively.

The CMA Awards averaged a 3.8 rating last night from 8-11 pm, improving ABC’s overall Thursday performance dramatically.  However, the show is down 21% from last year, a 4.8 rating on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 8-11 pm.  Changing nights, whether it’s a series or a special, is always risky, as viewer habit is a tenuous phenomenon.

NBC’s Thursday consisted of a 1.3 rating from 8-10 pm for a repeat of The Voice and a similar rating for Rock Center.  Overall, the night rated very close to a typical night with much more costly original comedy episodes.  Rock Center did a little better than usual but the 9 pm hour was a little lower-rated than normal.   In any case, the results have been dismal on NBC Thursday whatever the program combination.
