AGENT CARTER was creditable, if not heroic, in its debut.
DEMOGRAPHIC DETAIL: For each broadcast program (or hour segment), the chart below displays preliminary key advertiser demographics (adult 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 ratings), audience skews (women 18-49, men 18-49 and adults 50+ shares) and total viewership (thousands of people over the age of 2).
Ratings analysis and comparisons follow the chart.
ABC: AGENT CARTER’s 1.9 was in line with the show it’s temporarily replacing, AGENTS OF SHIELD. However, the dip to 1.7 by the final half-hour wasn’t such good news, especially since ABC provided non-stop hype throughout the broadcast for the first trailer for its ANT-MAN movie (which aired at the last possible moment) to keep viewers tuned in. FOREVER followed at a steady but dull 1.1.
CBS: Ancient it may be, but NCIS is still a force, returning from the holidays up 0.4 at a mighty 2.8. That lifted NCIS: NEW ORLEANS by 0.6 to 2.5, and PERSON OF INTEREST up 0.4 to a timeslot-tying 1.7.
NBC: The night began with reruns of PARKS & RECREATION (which will air in the slot starting next week) at 0.9/0.8. The new episodes of MARRY ME and ABOUT A BOY (which just had its order trimmed to 20 episodes) couldn’t do any better with a pair of series-low 0.8s. In that context, CHICAGO FIRE was impressive, more than doubling its lead-in to its standard 1.7.
FOX: MASTERCHEF JR returned at 1.8, leading into NEW GIRL at a solid 1.5. THE MINDY PROJECT, though, trailed badly at 1.0, down 0.1 from its most recent episode.
CW: Still in reruns at 0.5/0.4.
It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that tonight is the must crucial of the season for FOX, which delivers the one-two punch of AMERICAN IDOL’s return and the premiere of EMPIRE. The network desperately needs good results from those two if it’s going to lift its season from the lower depths. CBS has THE MENTALIST in its final resting place of 8PM, followed by the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS, while NBC has its regular line-up. ABC, hoping it has something real on its hands with GALAVANT, called an audible yesterday and rushed reruns of its first two episodes into the 10PM slot, instead of the scheduled FOREVER rerun.
