THURSDAY NIGHT BOX OFFICE: “2 Guns” Starts Small

2 GUNS (Universal), with a 10PM Thursday start, had an unexceptional $1.2M launch, on the low end of the summer.  But while it was below White House Down‘s $1.35M, and that action movie went on to just a $24.9M weekend, it’s in the same neighborhood as Now You See Me ($1.5M) and The Heat ($1M), both of which went on to lengthy and successful runs.  2 Guns, with an R rating and Denzel Washington as one of the leads, may appeal to an older audience that’s less likely to begin its weekend on Thursdays.  Or this could be the first sign of a softer opening than expected–we’ll find out soon enough.  Washington’s recent action movie Fridays have been at $13.6M for Safe House, $8M for Unstoppable, $11.7M for The Book of Eli and $8.2M for The Taking of Pelham 123.
