THURSDAY NIGHT BOX OFFICE: “The Heat” and “White House Down” Start Slow and Full Summer Thursday Results

Neither THE HEAT (20th) nor WHITE HOUSE DOWN (Sony) is expected to turn many heads at the box office this weekend (Mitch Metcalf’s predictions are here), and that was reflected in their early Thursday night and midnight Friday results.  White House, which started its screenings at 7PM, earned $1.35M, while The Heat, which waited until 10PM, was at $1M.

For reference, here’s how the summer movies have been doing thus far in Thursday evening/Friday midnight screenings and in their full opening weekend (just counting Fri-Sun even if the film opened on Wed or Thurs).  Although there’s certainly a correlation between Thursday results and weekend box office, it’s not necessarily a straightforward one, and night-before screenings tend to make up 5-10% of the full weekend–which would be bad news for this weekend’s arrivals.   Note:  as with last night, these films may have begun their runs anywhere from 7PM on:
