OPENINGS: The only new wide release on Halloween weekend was the low-budget horror movie COME PLAY (Focus/Universal), which was relatively impressive compared to last week’s $1.3M for Empty Man with $3.2M. It seemed to be helped by pandemic considerations, because while normally a Saturday Halloween would be a down day, this year moviegoing appeared less risky than trick-or-treating or large parties in some eyes, resulting in an 18% Saturday bump. Come Play also took in $570K overseas in 12 markets.
In the same genre, SPELL (Paramount) had a limited release at 369 theatres and emerged with $210K. (It’s also available digitally.)
HOLDOVERS: HONEST THIEF (Open Road) fell 43% to $1.4M, and might reach $15M in the US. It also has $7.6M overseas.
THE WAR WITH GRANDPA (101) fell 44% to $1.1M, also on track for $15M in the US, with $5.6M overseas to date.
TENET (Warners) lost 32% to $890K, and unless NY/LA cinemas open, $60M in the US may be a stretch. It’s at $293.3M overseas.
Even with Halloween, THE EMPTY MAN (20th/Disney) fell 57% to $560K, and may not see $5M in the US. It has $120K overseas.
Theatres continued to be fed with re-releases from Disney: HOCUS POCUS at $460K, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS at $390K, and MONSTERS, INC. at $230K.
NEXT WEEKEND: The highest-profile opening we’ve had in several weeks is LET HIM GO (Focus/Universal), which is backed by a relatively large national marketing campaign.
