Weekend Box Office Forecast AUGUST 8-10

Weekend #32 of 2014 is looking like $152 million for the top 12 films this weekend, up 11%from the norm for this weekend and the second up weekend in a row after six straight down weekends.

Opening at over 3,700 theaters Friday (above the 2,886 average theater count for opening weekends the last two years), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Paramount should average $10,400 per theater for the weekend (for a $38.5 million opening three-day weekend). [The average wide-release film the past two years has had a three-day opening weekend of $5,300 per theater for a $14.5 million weekend.] Early reviews at RottenTomatoes are a weak 33% positive so far. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on track for around $108 million domestic. Overseas the film could gross about $272 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $380 million

Opening at around 3,250 theaters Friday, Into the Storm from Warner Brothers should average $4,900 per theater for the weekend (for a $15.5 million opening weekend). No reviews yet at RottenTomatoes. The film is on track for around $42 million domestic, with a potential for another $74 million total overseas. Worldwide box office target: $116 million

Opening at around 2,000 theaters Friday, Step Up All In from Lionsgate/Summit should average $4,800 per theater for the weekend (for a $9.7 million opening weekend). Critical sentiment is a middling 57% positive so far. The film is on track for around $32 million domestic, with a potential for another $100 million total overseas. Worldwide box office target: $132 millionThis would be below the $159.3 million worldwide for Step Up 3D (released 8.6.2010 with $42.4 million domestic total and $116.9 million overseas) and $150.8 million worldwide for Step Up 2 the Streets (released 2.14.2008 with $58.0 million domestic and $92.8 million overseas) but still above the $114.2 million for the original Step Up (released 8.11.2006 with $65.3 million domestic and $48.9 million overseas).    

Opening at around 2,000 theaters Friday, The Hundred-Foot Journey from Disney should average $4,900 per theater for the weekend (for a $9.5 million opening weekend). Critical sentiment is a mediocre 46% positive so far. The film is on track for around $29 million domestic, with a potential for another $36 million total overseas. Worldwide box office target: $65 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy will be the #1 holdover by a mile and probably the #1 film again this weekend overall unless the Ninja Turtles explode.

For the past four years, the top 12 films this weekend have averaged $138 million total, ranking 22nd of 52 weeks. Last year, this weekend’s total was $142 million (while 2012 was $133 million, 2011 was $143 million and 2010 was $132 million). This Friday-Sunday is looking like a solid $152 million, up 11% from the multi-year average for the comparable weekend and up 7% from the same weekend last year.
