Weekend Box Office Predictions 10.2-4.2015

Weekend #40 of 2015 is looking like $143 million for the top 12 films this weekend, above the norm for this weekend but close to last year’s strong weekend (see comparisons below).

The Martian from Fox should open with a $55.0 million weekend. Strong critical support: 93% positive reviews so far. The film is on track for around $166 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $340 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $506 million.

Sicario from Lionsgate should open with a $13.0 million weekend.  Similarly strong critical support: 92% positive in early reviews.  The film is on track for around $51 million domestic. Overseas the film could bring in $65 million, giving it a worldwide box office target of $116 million.

For the past four years, the top 12 films this weekend have averaged $118 million total (Friday-Sunday), ranking 32nd of 52 weeks. Last year, this weekend’s total was $140 million (while 2013 was $115 million, 2012 was $133 million and 2011 was $85 million). This Friday-Sunday is looking like a sturdy $143 million, up +21% from the multi-year average for the comparable weekend but up only +3% from the same weekend last year.
